Project Type: Site Development for North Beach Village
Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Semester: Fall 2016
Professor: Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA
School: University of Southern California
Sea level rise is inevitable and it will be responsible for changing one of the most vulnerable regions of the state, the landscape of South Florida. Heavy rainfall, storm surges, and flooding of streets from King Tides all contribute to the abundance of water on the site without proper means to flow back into the water cycle. Constantly in the shadow of Miami, the second most populous city in the region, Fort Lauderale is one of the first to be inundated as sea levels rise. North Beach Village’s location on a barrier island, with aging infrastructure, porous limestone geology and dense coastal development make it even more vulnerable to serious destruction if actions are not taken to adapt to sea level rise and mitigate flooding.
